I had a nice loss this week. I suspect a goodly bit was water due to camp salty food, but I'll take a week like this any time.
One of the things that we're doing more of these days is using olive oil for various things. This is supposed to be a lot healthier. It turns out that no matter what the topic, you'll find some people who are intensely interested in it who are experts in that field.
Karen and I went to a fascinating little shop called "We Olive". These folks treat olive oil like other folks treat fine wines. The shop offers tasting of various vintages -- both directly in little cups and indirectly using bread pieces on toothpicks. You can get an oil that is more "grassy" or more "fruity", etc.
We bought an oil that was more like butter flavor for use in my homemade microwave popcorn. It tastes very nice. Downside it is pretty pricey, but I just just a teeny bit in each batch. We still use Trader Joe Olive Oil for general work (like last nights broiled asparagus -- yum!), but we use the "good stuff" for my popcorn.

Posted by fellow HealthSteward Shari-330 from California on Aug 17, 2009 Lee, Great job on your results this update! And you have made we want to check out some more olive oil. I've never found one I liked as I thought it all tasted "old" somehow. But I think I will follow your lead. Peace, Shari

Posted by fellow HealthSteward Tim-215 from Ohio on Aug 17, 2009 Good loss! My cardiologist drinks 2 tbsp olive oil / day! It is better than ... and perhaps every food is better than and less than something. It's a healthier type of oil: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN01037 .... any oil, no matter what kind, is a liquid fat so they're all about 130 calories a tablespoon, so there are calories counting even if we aren't keeping track of them. But we do need some fat, and olive oil has really nice health benefits compared to, ahem, bacon grease. Which is what I sweat when I run, because that's what we cooked with. By the way, everything available to eat in Palestine when Jesus walked the earth was remarkably healthful. There's even a nice book called What Would Jesus Eat. Think of all the biblical uses for olive oil; cosmetic value, lamp oil, cooking ingredient, topping, medicinal, even as an element of healthful anointing.

Posted by fellow HealthSteward Mary-104 from Minnesota on Aug 17, 2009 Nice loss, Lee! And a gourmet olive oil store--what fun--I usually just buy the Wal-Mart brand, but I've recently moved up from the plain stuff to EVOO, LOL...

Posted by fellow HealthSteward Jane-112 from Australia on Aug 17, 2009 Yeah, olives and oil are big business here - our beautiful mediterrean climate and large Italian population ensure we have delightful olive groves and blends - a little is good but as 'fats' are my weakness, I try not to get too connisseur'y with it! Good loss Lee. J
