I had gone to my doctor for my strained back and sore knee looking for pain relief. As part of the appointment I was weighed in at 337lbs, a new record! Shortly after I saw Dr. Nick interviewed on Fox and Friends, and was shocked that someone who weighted 467lbs could ever be of normal weight. I always assumed that the body had a "normal" weight due to genetics and or a natural "set point". I decided to read his book to see how he did it.
In reading the book, the main message I picked up was that our bodies are a gift, and that I took pretty bad care of my gift. Dr. Nick said something to the effect that if we were given one car to drive for life, how would we take care of it? It opened my eyes. I now look at food as a means of survival not pleasure. For instance, I would wolf down a pack of M&M’s barely tasting them. Now if I choose to eat some M&M’s I take each individually and savor the flavor. My sweet tooth is then satisfied. It’s not that I am "dieting", I’m not really, I just listen to my body and give it what it needs. I look at potato chips and such like wasted nutrition. The calories you intake must be burned off. So if I do eat a potato chip or something like that I eat one or 2 so that my craving is satisfied. It works for me.
I, like Dr. Nick, was a skinny kid until I was eight years old. At that time my family moved and the loss of all of my friends was very traumatic for me. I was shy and had a hard time making new friends so I spent a lot of time down in our basement watching tv and snaking on crackers, hershey chocolate bits and what ever else I could sneak. So I have been overweight since I was 8 years old. Other than my weight, I am in generally good health currently. In 1992 I had a partial thryoidectomy (left side) due to noggles in my thyroid gland. A couple of years later the remainder was removed for the same problem. I had right knee scope in 2003 for arthritis. The left knee was scoped in 2004 for a torn meniscus. The left is still stiff and tender. I also have a degenerative disk in my lower back which flares up from time to time. Very painful.
